Slide is from a collection of images by Priestley & Sons Ltd 1 Falkland Road, Wallasey, professional photographers with studios in Wallasey between c1871-1931. The collection is of ships taken mainly in the Port of Liverpool or Liverpool Bay area

Slide of SS Germanic a White Star Line ship with a long and interesting history.

SS Germanic was built by Harland & Wolff in 1875 and operated by the White Star Line. She was primarily powered by steam, although she also carried 4 masts.

She held the Blue Riband a number of times East and Westbound.

in 1910 she was bought by the Turkish Government for transport purposes, renamed Gul Djemal. During WW1 she carried Turkish troops to war against the allies. On May 3 1915 she was carrying over 4000 Turkish soldiers when she was torpedoed by an allied submarine. This was one of the worst sea disasters in history as most of the troops lost their lives.

She survived WWII became a storage ship in 1949 and finally converted to a floating hotel in 1950. She was scrapped in October 1950 having survived 75 years.
