Make no mistake, Mad at the Sun are a seminal band. Founders of the Exeter post-hardcore scene, this collection of demo tracks is as much a souvenir of the 1988-90 era as it is a tribute to a band whose former members now reside in Devon luminaries Annalise and The Once Over Twice. Exeter in 1988 was a musical wasteland of pub rock and covers bands, and MATS, eagerly devouring as much of American hardcore punk culture as they could get their hands on, carved the scene out of nothing. Soon promoting and releasing under the Hometown Atrocities moniker, the visit of Fugazi (with MATS supporting) in 1989 was testament to Exeter’s growing reputation. ‘Hot Snow Falling’ is not as disjointed a record as you might expect for an album pieced together from compilation appearances, despite Ed’s assertion in the sleeve notes that ‘This isn’t the album we would have recorded’ . Borrowing strongly from Embrace and Dag Nasty, MATS’s Minor Threat-esque righteous hardcore interspersed with periods of off kilter guitar work and loose arrangements is most effective in parts of ‘The Last Time’ and ‘Straight Ahead’. In a climate of insipid pop music, MATS were pioneers. Exeter, and UK post-hardcore, would be lost without them.
