An excellent well made Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian Bifacial Lanceolate Pointed quartzite Handaxe some 14.5cm tall.
A well made example with a semi circular butt end & tapering sides leading to a noticeably pointed tip. Palm & finger rests have been flaked into the axe to allow for a comfortable grip.
This Acheulian, Lower Palaeolithic implement is an extremely ancient form & would have been fashioned by Homo ergaster ( erectus ) well over 500000 years ago.
It has the classic desert wind induced gloss & a DISTINCT TWO TONE PATINA - caused by long term exposure to the elements as it lay exposed on one side for millennia.
Found on an exposed site in the Sahara Desert within Algeria, Africa
An above average large handaxe with well executed form - as such a great addition to a lithics collection.
Large & thus heavy.
