The full cheeks and loose rings (set outside the cheek) ensure that this bit is guaranteed not to pinch the sensitive corners of the horse's mouth; the cheeks give an additional 'hint' on steering, from their gentle opposing pressure when asking for a turn or bend, meaning that a much more subtle rein aid can be used, preserving the softness and responsiveness of the horse's mouth.
Sadly it's all too common nowadays to see horses overburdened with all types of contraptions and restraints, without much thought given to why those horses aren't happily accepting the bit in the first place. Granted, if your horse really has a 'spoiled mouth' (hopefully not spoiled by you!) then he may well need contraptions or a strong bit - but an unspoiled horse or a youngster is likely to find this style of bit the most acceptable of all.
The Australian Long-Cheeked Loose-Ring Snaffle is the archetypal Aussie bit, used by the majority of Australian stockmen and drovers for the simple reason that it worked very well on almost any horse. It was adopted by the Fulmer School of Equitation (for the same reasons!) and hence acquired its other name - the Fulmer Snaffle. The same style of bit is used in the Spanish Riding School on young horses, preparatory to working in a double bridle.
In short, it's a bit used extensively by 'those who know'.
