"A complete and fully illustrated record of all classes of steam locomotives acquired from the London Midland and Scottish Railway by British Railways, together with full details of those built subsequent to January 1948, to LMS design.  Included in the text are brief descriptions of the origin and history of each type.  Many varieties have already disappeared, and the notes incorporate up-to-date information regarding the number of survivors of the older classes which were still in existence by Spring, 1955.

For convenience and ease of reference the classes are dealt with as nearly as practicable in the order of British Railways numbering, although one or two slight deviations from exact sequence are necessary so that similar types can be grouped together on facing or consecutive pages, for easy comparison.

This volume embraces all locomotives numbered by British Railways between 40000 and 59999, the block of numbers allocated to the LMS engines.  Railway enthusiasts will find of particular interest the illustrations which have been collected for this volume, the greater part of which have not before appeared in print."



This is a hardback book complete with its dustjacket.  The boards are still a clean, solid maroon (very slight fading towards the top of the book).    Gilt titles on the spine.    Very very slight rubbing to edge and spine of cover.  The dustjacket is unclipped, has rubbing to edges and several tears at top bottom  but is complete, back slightly grubby (can be seen on picture).  Inside the book is lovely and clean with 20 pages of text (not including titles) and 85 pages of black and white photographs.

Originally bought from Foyles bookshop and still has original Foyles sticker inside front cover.
