Description: An excellent gouache portrait watercolour on artist's paper, signed "Leo Bates" and dating circa 1920s. Framed - approx 16 X 12 inches (40.64 X 30.48cm). This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Art Deco period. The portrait depicts a wonderful study of a character from a book. This original watercolour gouache was produced for the cover of a book jacket. Pencil sketched this fabulous sea fairing character wears a yellow fisherman's smock with purple 'kerchief' around this neck. He smiles cheekily, having ruddy red cheeks, smoking a clay pipe, sporting a sailing cap. Appearing to be leaning on the side of a boat, the sea and clouds in the background are executed in thick gouache. A wonderful illustration. The work is signed "Leo Bates" lower right.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1920s.
Artist Biography: Leo Bates (British) - Prolific illustrator of children's books during the early to mid 20th Century including "The Scarlet Pimpernell" and novels by "Bessie Marchant" amongst many others.
Framing: Later plain moulded Pine. Finish: Limed.
Condition: The painting is in fine original condition, having some slight flaking to the gouache in the cloud area, otherwise bright of colour. The later frame is in good condition.
