A large scalloped charger measuring 31 cm diameter and 5 cm high. Not sure as to whether it is Chinese or Japanese or even European!! but by subject matter seems to be oriental. Age would be about 1800/1830s I think, based on my perfunctory research. The characters etc are hand painted. A palette of yellow, green (two types), aubergine, orange, blue and black. The umbrella is a strong yellow whilst the tree trunks and 'demon's'' clothing are aubergine. The kimono is an orange with black belt the bag she is carrying is also aubergine. The foliage of the trees is a emerald sea green. The rain effect is achieved by single stroke grey marks. . Some of the colours look like they may have been applied on a second or third firing. The border on the rim seems to be transfer. There is no damage and the dish has a good ring to it. The clear glaze has a bluish tinge to it with some pitting and flecks of brown (ferric particles picked up on way to and/or in kiln). It has a hand executed three blue band/rings around the footring. My estimate is that it is Japanese/Chinese made about early 1800s. The condition is very good to excellent.
