BRETBY ART POTTERY

Woodville, Derbyshire

OWL

Original mould c 1905

You are bidding for the above Bretby Art Pottery Owl in realistic colourway, This is the same mould as the Bronze Owl pictured in Michael David Ash's book - Bretby Art Pottery -  which has a date of c 1905 ( Page 34 - Plate 7).  However I am advised that Bretby were notorious for reusing moulds much later and that expert understanding of the glazes is the accurate method of dating.

The Owl is hand painted in both semi-matt and gloss glazes and the moulded bird  gives the impression of having been hand "tidied" (probably with wood spatula or the like) in the clay around the feet and base before firing. The colours used are applied by hand  very thickly and on the bird itself (which is high gloss) there is crazing. The overall effect is very realistic with skillful and accurate painting.

The Owl is in good overall condition but has one small flake / chip at the base at the back - (see image). This is in the area of green and the unscrupulous would colour over. Because of the rough texture here the chip seems to be a piece of thick glaze / colour flaking away from the clay within this rough texture. It is a very simple restoration / repair.

The bird stands 12" tall x 8" wide and weighs around 1700 gms. The Bretby backstamp is in the mould but very indistinct - it is obvious however if you know what you are looking for and look at it from the side - adjusting the light. It is not possible to accurately read the mould number although it looks like 1517 ?
