Pretty Alphabet Sampler. Elizabeth Watkins aged 9
A pretty little double alphabet sampler with the maker's name (Elizabeth Watkins, aged 9 years). How can I date it to 1843? Read on.... The cloth is undyed and has a rustic, open weave. It is mostly worked in black, red, pink, and purple woollen threads. There is a floral border. Measures approx. 29cm x 44cm (11" x 17").
Condition is good and sturdy and the colours have a lovely mellow quality. Very little fading. Some damage to "Watkins" - see scan
A very good example. Perfect for your collection or ideal for framing.
I have a second sampler from Elizabeth, aged 6, on eBay at the moment. It is dated 1840 - that's how I can date this one to 1843
