Needed on many vintage watches which
have a fixed loop to fasten the strap to, rather
than the more modern lugs with spring bars.
(it will still fit a modern watch that takes a 6mm strap
- just cut away the old strap, leaving the spring bars
in position, and thread through.) 

The strap threads through the fixed loop on either end
  of the watch, and is then closed in position with metal
closures similar to a paper-fastener
