Firstly the information you need the tag to communicate for you must be permanent.  That sounds obvious but there are people on ebay who sell "photo engraved" tags . This type of engraving is not suitable as it is only a surface matt finish that will quickly be indistinguishable.

The actual tag should be of sufficient quality to last and not degrade in quality.
