LOVELY ANTIQUE FRENCH / RUSSIAN SILVER TOBACCO ? CASE A wonderful antique solid sterling silver cigar or tobacco case; beautifully made, with very finely hand engraved decoration throughout featuring an indoor social scene involving a very pleased man with pipe and glass in hand, and a second, dejected-looking man with only a glass, his pipe lying on the floor in two pieces. With hinged button-operated lid and second hinged door to the base, with inner door - probably for matches. The interior with a pale gilt finish.
A high quality, wonderfully interesting and collectable antique item!
CONDITION: All original and very good. Some signs of wear commensurate with age and use, a few shallow dents/some distortion, small split to one side, lower door doesn't quite close properly, an easy fix for any good jeweller.
DATE/MARKS: Around 1850/70. French control marks to front lip and lower door, Russian (St. Petersburg) 84 mark to rear lip, with maker's/workmaster's Mark 'PT' (in cyrillic).
DIMENSIONS: 5 ¼ inches tall (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.
WEIGHT: Approx. 84.2 grams.
