LLANGOLLEN 50TH INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD 1996

The international Musical Eisteddfod was conceived in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War by the Late Harold Tudor of Coedpoeth. The idea was taken up by W. S. Gwyn Williams of Llangollen, a leading Welsh musician of the day, and George Northing, who at the time was Chairman of the Llangollen Urban District Council. Between them, they persuaded the citizens of Llangollen that such a venture was possible.

The object was to hold a festival, in the style of a traditional competitive Welsh Eisteddfod, where the peoples of the world could meet in a congenial atmosphere, without the hatred that had undoubtedly been generated between nations of six years of conflict and war.

It was a gesture to the world that the people of Llangollen took to their hearts.

Invitations went out for the first International Eisteddfod held in june 1947. Europe was in turmoil, everyone was trying to rebuild. Petrol and food were rationed. No one was really sure if anyone was going to come. But they did come. Fourteen countries that first year, despite appalling problems and they have continued to come ever since. The warmth and friendships generated in that first eisteddfod are still cherished today, as areall that have arisen since.

Currently Llangollen ranks amongst the great musical festivals of the world as illustrated by the fact that this year (1996) more than forty nations will meet under the Eisteddfod motto "Blessed is a world that sings, gentle are it's songs".

The people of Llangollen have continued to love and nurture their gesture to peace and understanding in the world for half a century. They show no sign of flagging.
