The Morning Ride

This 1859 lithograph is one of the most charming of the many bucolic scenes produced by Currier & Ives. Louis Maurer was only twenty-seven when he executed this print; he had already been working for Nathaniel Currier for eight years. He remained associated with the firm until his retirement in 1884.

Maurer has depicted here, in some detail, a family of five on a country road on an early summer day. It is possible to surmise a number of facts from the print. The family is relatively wealthy, as one can judge from their dress and from the fine pair of matched horses. It is likely that the homestead down in the valley belongs to them. The weather is changeable: they are fairly heavily dressed yet the mother carries a fan. Their carriage, named after a city in Pennsylvania, is a Germantown, often called a Germantown Rockaway. It was a very popular style in this period. It is also probable that it is a Sunday, and the family is heading for a nearby small town to attend church services.

A century ago Currier & Ives prints captured an America in mid-passage - it's way of life, news events, customs, methods of travel, its romantic history, even its fashion and humor. The firm of "Currier & Ives" was a New York printmaking firm from 1857 until 1907. Nathaniel Currier was a printmaker and James Ives started as the firm's bookkeeper, and in 1857, became Currier's partner. Neither man was an artist. The prints were drawn and lithographed by other persons. Nathaniel Currier died in 1888 and James Ives died in 1895. The firm carried on until 1907 under the direction of their sons, Edward West Currier and Chauncey Ives. The business of the firm was to produce lithographed prints which were intended to be sold to the general public for picture framing and display in the home or business place. For nearly seventy-five years, the firm provided "Colored Engravings for the People," and called themselves "Printmakers to the People." Currier and Ives gave America a nineteenth-century pictorial history of the country's growth from an agricultural society to an industrialized one. Many newsworthy events were recorded with prints depicting every subject relating to American life: religion, politics, historical figures, views of homes, rural homesteads, sports, music, entertainment, games, life in the home, children, wildlife, hunting, fishing, railroad trains, ships, and many more. Many of the artists that Currier & Ives used are unknown today, and many are more famous artists such as J. E. Butterworth, George H. Durrie, Louis Maurer, Frances or "Fanny" Flora Bond Palmer, Charles Parsons, Napoleon Sarony, and Thomas Worth. Currier & Ives' prints were sold either directly from Currier & Ives' shop in New York or through other printsellers around the United States and overseas. Other printsellers were always eager to carry the latest images because of the quality and variety of Currier & Ives prints. The number of recorded Currier & Ives prints is now over 7,500 different titles, although new titles turn up occasionally all carefully recorded by the American Historical Print Collectors Society in order to maintain a current listing of Currier & Ives prints. They can be found on the internet. Most Currier & Ives prints were hand-colored lithographs, but Currier & Ives also issued some uncolored prints and also chromolithographs. The smaller folio prints which are approximately 8" x 12 1/2" originally sold for about 20 cents each and the medium folio, approximately 10-14" x 14-20" and large folio consisting of prints about 14" x 20," sold for between $1 and $3. It's easy to see why once, these handsome prints graced many American homes. We even occasionally see them on the walls of homes depicted in many older movies. Today they can rarely be seen, except in a few private collections and museums. The most valuable Currier & Ives prints are what are called "Best 50" prints which were judged to be the best, as a result of a study sponsored by the American Historical Print Collectors Society, but collectors should not limit themselves to these prints. It is always desirable to acquire at least one of the "Best 50" prints. The prints I sell are original portfolio book prints (also called "plates"). The quality is excellent as shown. Knowing their work would be examined under intensive scrutiny, the publishers used the best processes and paper available at the time this particular print was printed. (See details above). In some cases book prints are the only possible way to acquire copies of the rare paintings, engravings, and photographic images. They are an excellent alternative to expensive art prints, which you can expect to pay much more for in today's market. When compared to expensive posters, the quality of these prints are often quite noticeably more vivid and sharp. Add a frame and you can enjoy this print and it's aesthetic appeal without spending a fortune!

My shipping procedures...
Much care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in protective sleeves, gently rolled, and inserted into a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your print(s). PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGE WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.

Payment & Shipping...IMPORTANT

• Domestic Orders (within the United States)...
• Paying with PayPal will expedite your order and will allow you to be able to see when your package was shipped and delivered (delivery confirmation). When paying with PayPal, your order will be shipped to the address specify in PayPal when making your payment.
• Paying with Check/Money Order is acceptable but will result in delays because your check must clear my bank before your order will be shipped. There is a $20.00 charge for returned checks. When paying with check or money order, your order will ship to the address you specified in ebay.
• All domestic orders are insured with my personal guarantee. If your print is damaged upon arrival, I will replace it. If a replacement is not available, I will refund the cost of the item.
• We always try to ship within 2-3 days of payment, but we ask that you please be patient. My wife has been battling cancer for more than a year now and our schedule revolves mostly around her care and treatment. I usually get a chance to ship every day but sometimes I get backed up. If it is an emergency and you need your prints immediately, send me an email me to let me know and I will rush the order.
• When your order is shipped, you will receive a shipping notification by email. If your domestic order has not arrived within 14 days, please contact the postal service to report a lost shipment. Provide them with the delivery confirmation or tracking number found in the Shipping Notification email and the ship date. They will try to track down the package. If it still hasn't arrived within 20 days, please contact me and I will see that your order is shipped again.
• International Orders...
• Only PayPal payments accepted for international orders.
• International packages can only be tracked if you select Priority or Express Mail.
• Once your order is shipped, you will receive an automated shipping notification to let you know your order is on its way. Depending on your whereabouts and the reliability of the postal service, it could take several weeks for your package to arrive. Please check with your local postal service to determine standard ship time for mail from the United States if you feel it is taking too long to arrive. If your international order has not arrived within six weeks, please contact me. Delivery problems are extremely rare for the number of international orders we ship.
• Insurance is not available for international orders. However...
• If you select Priority or Express Mail and your order has not arrived within six weeks, we will send your order again only if you pay for shipping again.
• If you select Standard economy shipping and your order doesn't arrive within six weeks, we will send your order again only if you pay for shipping plus half the cost of the prints again. This is due to our inability to track, confirm, or insure packages shipped economy mail. Again, Delivery problems are extremely rare for the number of international orders we ship. (Limit one replacement order at half price).
