VICTORIAN c.1890 MAHOGANY DRESSER BY LIBERTY OF LONDON

Beautiful and elegant classic design with understated ART NOUVEAU details including heart-shaped brass escutcheons, leaded light cupboard doors. It is a superb quality dresser in solid gorgeous dark but vibrant reddish-brown colour mahogany.

The base is decorated with a shaped skirt, and has 2 large, deep drawers with heart-shaped escutcheons and 4 original chunky brass handles.

The dresser top has 3 shelves with 'grooved' design to their fronts, graduating upwards from shallow to deep, by 1/2" each. The shelves are flanked by small drawers with original small brass knobs, leaded light glass fronted cupboards, each containing 2+1 shelves,  the doors having brass heart-shaped escutheons. Over the cupboards on each side there are 2 shelves, top ones are shaped to match the base skirt and pelmet. The 2 shaped shelves both had some repair done, the semi-circular parts that stick out must have been snapped off at some point, and have been re-glued, the repair is only visible on close examination.

All the drawers are dovetailed.

There is a wide cornice on top, above the shaped pelmet. The back is tongue-and groove panelled. The dresser is standing on elegant cabriole legs with rounded-off square feet, another early Art Nouveau inspired feature.

On the back it has the white ivorine 'Liberty & Co Ltd London' plaque. Brass locks on drawers, marked 'Liberty Co Ltd' and 'Best Quality Lever'.

The dresser is in excellent condition, other than the repair to the 2 small shelves, there doesn't seem to be any damage. It has all the original fittings, the wood is all solid mahogany with a lovely patina, there may be a scuff/scratch or two near the legs, but would polish out, no major scratces, so overall well-looked after and ready to be displayed and used.

The top can be removed from base for easier transport.

This is a truly rare, sought-after piece of furniture from a top retailer, Liberty of London, and of superb quality, well built and made from expensive, quality mahogany. It's a beautiful dresser, very elegant in design, with early Art Nouveau influence, but not too stylized, so would suit most homes.
