RECORDED SEPTEMBER 25th, 1959.
This excellent LP features the ill-fated vibraphonist Lem Winchester with tenor saxophonist Benny Golson for three standards, an obscurity and two of the leader's own compositions.
The music falls between bop and hard bop, with consistently swinging solos that are generally fairly inventive.
This was one of Winchester's three recordings for New Jazz, as is easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans.
Lem Winchester was born in Philadelphia in 1928. He had great potential as a vibraphonist, but it was all cut short by a tragic accident in 1961, when he unsuccessfully demonstrated a trick with a revolver.
Influenced by Milt Jackson, but developing a sound of his own, Lem played tenor, baritone and piano before choosing to stick exclusively to vibes. he made a big impression at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958 and was soon recording regularly with such major players as Oliver Nelson.
Originally a police officer, Lem resigned from the force in 1960 so as to be a musician full time, sadly, this was not to be a long-lasting career.
