This a cross that apparently has some authentic history. The appraiser had a genuine interest in this crucifix, estimating it's value at around $4000. The body of the cross is two pieces of thick leather sewn together, with the medal, Italian Code of Arms, in the oval along with the six balls, indicative of the deMedici Family - symbol of Italian Royalty. Patrons of the Arts, strong participants in the start of the Renaissance, dominant family in the history of Florence, the deMedici Family appear prominently in the 15th and the 18th century. The appraiser allowed that it very possibly was a reliquary - a cross that concealed an item from Christ's crucifixion such as a piece of the original cross, a fragment of cloth, hair or bone secreted within! This revelation was not authenticated because the cross would have had to be "disected" looking for the hidden item. This was unacceptible therefore, it was not done. Each medallion is individually sewn to the first piece leather with the back piece of leather being otherwise blank and thereby concealing the, if any, reliquary. The cross has had nothing done to it in over 50 years nor has it been cleaned or tampered with. There is no companion chain. It measures 4 1/8" across X 2 7/8" length X 1/4" thick. If necessary, additional photos can be furnished.
