One day I'll probably regret this - but it's finally time to sell the 'Fatlass'!
A well-known bike at ILOC events, this is a very rare bike (fewer made than the SFC750, dontcha know?!). This particular one is one of the very last built, being a late-model Series 2 bike first registered in Switzerland in April 1991. I've owned it for seven years, having bought it from Phil Todd in January 2001. All documents are present, complete and correct.
It was imported into the UK in May 1996, showing 21857km; I bought it with 23710km and it is now showing 40600km (~25000 miles); I have every MoT from 1996 and a detailed service history with receipts. Servicing has been carried out by well-known Laverda specialists Mike Waugh at Montydons (www.montydons-laverda.co.uk) and Steve Winterton at Calere Laverda, with interim and general maintenance done by myself, a long-standing Laverda owner and enthusiast.
"Why am I selling it?" Simply because it just doesn't get the use it needs and deserves; last year it did 772km; the year before it did 513km - get the picture?! It's a bike that does need to be used and I have too many bikes and not enough time. It's a shame - and, yes, I probably will regret it, but I'd rather see somebody use it and enjoy it.
Check out the above link to Mike's website for details of the Atlas - he loves 'em and knows a lot about 'em too. Parts are available from Wolfgang Haerter in Canada and OCT in Germany (who bought all the factory spares), as well as from Mike himself. Maintenance is straightforward and I have copies of the manual and parts list too.
Despite the limited use in recent years, this bike has been used and enjoyed for some lengthy rides - to France for the Coupes Moto Legende at Montlhery and too Durness in the north-west of Scotland to see the Midnight Sun (it rained...), for example. These journeys were covered with ease and saw 60+mpg from the 5.5 gallon (25 litre) tank. This is bike that's great fun on the country lanes and sweepy A roads, but can also keep up with the crowds on motorways if needed.
Recent work includes a brand new starter clutch assembly, starter relay and steering head bearings (1500km ago), plus new gearbox sprocket and Regina 'O' ring chain (less than 500km ago). Oil is changed every 1500km with Valvoline 20/50 (same as I use in my RGS). Tyres are superb Michelin Anneke radials and have been on for 4500km, fitted to the original gold Akront rims.
Condition of the bike - I would class it as superb (some would say mint) - you won't find a better one; it also won an award at this year's ILOC AGM. It does have a few small marks if you look hard - the odd chip on the frame and fork legs, rust blisters on the black-painted handlebars. Definitely no dents, scrapes or significant marks at all. Paintwork is original and polishes up beautifully as you can see - and the tank's fibreglass, so no worries about it rotting. The exhaust system is original too - downpipes have surface rust (they're in the firing line of the muck off the front wheel) and the silencer has recently been professionally repaired so shouldn't need any work for a good while yet. The seat was professionally recovered early in my ownership and is unmarked. All electrics work correctly.
The bike is MoT'd until May 2009 and is taxed until the end of April 2009, so it's ready to ride away and enjoy.
I currently have a mount fitted for my Garmin sat-nav and will remove it prior to sale; the rack and topcase are Givi - I'll also be swapping the case for a smaller one prior to sale.
Problems? - it can be a bugger to start! Certainly if it's been standing, it 'can' take a while, although it always does start - frequent use is all it needs - if I use it daily or a few times a week, it's fine - first time, every time. The new gearbox sprocket has been professionally welded onto the output shaft - the splines were showing some wear, which would only get worse, so welding was the obvious and effective and long-lasting solution - and, yes, the oil seal is fine!
So, there you have it. An ideal garage mate for your Jota, SFC, RGS, Mirage or SF, with none of the foibles of the later Zane twins. You can insure it on a 'classic' policy for very little too. Ready to ride away and enjoy for the rest of the summer and beyond. Viewings from genuine buyers are welcome and encouraged. Due to one bitter experience from an overseas buyer (and he's likely to read this) I will not accept bids from outside the EU - and I also insist that the bike is collected in person by the buyer. Sorry, as I know there are many genuine enthusiasts out there, but I'm not going through that hassle again. However, it does mean that you can enjoy the ride home....
With this sort of bike, it's very difficult to put a value to it (although I have an Agreed Value insurance valuation of £3000), so it's here with a very sensible Reserve - just so it doesn't go for nowt....
I live near Chippenham in Wiltshire, just 2 miles from M4 Jcn.17. I will happily collect the buyer from Chippenham or Bristol Railway Stations or Bristol Airport.
£100 deposit by Paypal within 24 hours of auction end, and balance in cash on collection. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions - there are bound to be things I've missed - use 'Ask Seller a Question' or call me on 07830 361068. Usual simple rules apply - 'to bid is to buy'. Please no timewasters.
Thanks and good luck. Alan.
On 17-May-08 at 13:51:47 BST, seller added the following information:I've taken some more photos today and uploaded them - close-ups are included too. Photo #9 shows the Givi topcase included in the sale (if you want it) - the original rack is factory-fitted and I have added a Givi plate to which the case is locked - very simple to remove and comes with a spare key too.
Just to confirm too that the bike is HPI clear, but please feel free to carry out your own checks - I have nothing to hide. The Reg. No. on the bike (H92 ARC) includes my initials - it's worth very little, but if possible I'd like to retain this number and revert the bike to it's original number (H498 NFX). This transfer is straighforward and would be at my expense, of course. If it's impractical or causes the buyer too much hassle, then I'll just leave it as is.
50+ watchers in the first 24 hours - wow!
I'm about for most of this weekend if you want to view the bike - just give me a ring or send a question.
Cheers, Alan.
