Thank you for your e-mail.
Yes, the GBP £700 'EL34 Ultra Linear -- Silver' can be upgraded
to Triode Connection for a better sound.
But we have learned some new tricks in 2005, and you will be better
off buying our latest 2006 GBP £688 'KT 88 Triode connection - Chinatown
Silver' or our latest 2006 GBP £650 'EL34 Triode connection - Chinatown
Silver', which sounds better, more open spacious sound (like an open field),
much cleaner sound (without harshness) then 3 year old models of our GBP
£1000 Russian KT 88 Triode connection, which received rave reviews
in http://www.affordablevalvecompany.info/kt88cust.htm (note to eBay moderator
this website does not have our telephone number, so the customer will have
to buy from our eBay listing and eBay will get its sales commission) -------
If you are using large 10 inch of 12 inch speakers loudspeakers, the bass
slam of our BEST RELIABLE EL34 valves are about 50 percent to 100 percent
better. (It is pointless to test the bass slam of amplifiers with six inch
speakers or electrostatic speakers). -------
WARNING = NEVER USE UNAUTHORISED VALVES (WITH A LAUGHABLE 90 DAYS GUARANTEE)
IN OUR AMPLIFIERS
Replacement cost of one set of EL34 + 5670 + 6N3 valves is only £50.
Replacement cost of one set of KT 88 + 5670 + 6N3 valves is £160.
If you buy grey imports, counterfeits, amplifiers with unauthorised
modification from unauthorised repair man, used amplifiers from other dealers
(our competitors), we will NOT sell you replacement valves. Please contact
to the other dealers (our competitors) for advice, replacement valves,
repairs, etc
| Question from eBay member on 3rd February 2006 = Hi, I'm very
interested in this item but are limited to a budget (900, it took a long
time to get here!). I hope to get as good as possible speakers from you
too with in this budget. Maybe I could put a best offer bid so I could
have more money for speakers but am afraid to show disrespect to you! I'd
like to hear if you could help me and hope that this isn't too small of
a budget for you to deal with. Kind regards |
| Answer = IF YOU LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY TO MY ADVICE (AND NOT
THE HYPE IN SOME HI FI MAGAZINES AND INTERNET FORUM) (AND KEEP ASKING ME
QUESTIONS, AND LISTENING TO MORE OF MY ADVICE) you will be pleasantly surprised
that |
GBP £900 for a valve amplifier and speakers is more than enough
to get ' ULTRA HIGH END' sound that
will EASILY sound 100 times better than
GBP £1600 SMALL 6 inch speakers recommended by some hifi magazine
+ GBP £850 or GBP £900 valve amplifiers recommended by
some hifi magazine
or GBP £3000 transistorised preamplifiers/Power amplifier recommended
by some hifi magazines
+ GBP £200 pounds interconnect
+ GBP £4000 loud speaker cables
+ GBP £100 for a naked virgin (male unfortunately) to sprinkle
snake oil on your hi-fi set on a full moon night. |
|
|
| When you have GBP £900 for a budget, you have to ask yourself
if you should spend GBP £450 for the amplifier and GBP £450
for the speakers. Or should you spend GBP £600 for the amplifier
and GBP £300 for the speakers. Or should you spend .......... |
In most (but not all) cases,
it is a bad idea to spend most of the GBP £900 budget on the
amplifier,
and leave yourself and GBP £200 to GBP £300 for the speakers.
Most of the GBP £200 to GBP £300 speakers sold in shops
will have
a SMALL 5 inch or SMALL 6 inch speakers that are TOO SMALL
to imitate / reproduce HUGE 22 inch kick bass drum or HUGE 32 inch
kettle drums
or HUGE 32 feet organ pipes.
They are also TOO SMALL to produce LOUD DEEP BASS or LOUD MUSIC to
fill 15 feet or 20 feet rooms. |
|
|
IF YOU HAVE 20 FEET ROOMS, and you want to sit 12 feet from the speakers,
you need BIG POWERFUL 10 inch or 12 inch woofers
+ DEDICATED midrange
+ NOTCH FILTER TUNED TO THE RESONANCE FREQUENCY OF THE TWEETER, to
help the cross over (12 decibels per octave or better) keep the mid range
out of the tweeter, so the tweeter does not overload and become harsh,
when you turn up the volume. |
To the best of my knowledge, the only loud speakers (below the GBP
£4,000) that
have all three features are our MODIFIED IN ENGLAND loud speakers
listed on eBay for GBP £450 (for rooms WITHOUT CARPETS) and GBP
£650 (for rooms with carpets). |
This leaves you GBP £250 or GBP £450 to buy a valve amplifier
with BIG output transformers.
This is not a problem, because we already have 2 customers who have
very expensive High End Transistorised Preamplifier & Transistorised
Power transistor amplifier,
who were 'dipping their toes' in the water,
to see if the claims about valves were true or hype,
so they tried our £250 amplifier,
and preferred our £250 amplifier to their expensive pre / power
transistors that cost about 10 to 20 times more ! |
|
|
IF YOU HAVE 15 FEET ROOMS, and you want to sit 10 feet from the speakers,
you need BIG POWERFUL 12 inch or 10 inch woofers (maybe 8 inch MIGHT
be enough)
+ DEDICATED mid range
+ if you listen at MODERATE VOLUMES, you might be able to save money,
and make do without the NOTCH FILTER TUNED TO THE RESONANCE FREQUENCY
OF THE TWEETER. |
To the best of my knowledge, the only loud speakers (below GBP £1,000)
that have BIG 10 inch woofer + DEDICATED mid range are our MODIFIED IN
ENGLAND loud speakers
listed on eBay for GBP £250 (for rooms WITHOUT CARPETS) and GBP
£450 (for rooms with carpets). |
| This leaves you GBP £450 or GBP £650 to buy a valve amplifier
with BIG output transformers. |
|
|
IF YOU HAVE 10 FEET Rooms,
and you MUST have SMALL six inch speakers in SMALL bookshelf/stand
mount cabinets,
please buy our eBay listings for GBP £450 or GBP £650 'almost
ULTRA HIGH END six inch speakers'. |
This at the only SMALL speakers (that I have heard) that I can listen
to for hours on end,
because they are one of the few speakers (regardless of size, price
or hype)
that does an excellent job of tricking me into believing that my favourite
singer is in my room,
and produces a reasonable amount of bass (FOR ITS SMALL SIZE),
and is NOT 'tin-ny' (too much treble or resonances / cone break up
in upper midrange or lower treble). |
According to my "golden ears" ears, our 'typical' famous British brand
GBP £300 six inch Kevlar speakers + metal Dome tweeter that received
"rave reviews" in MANY Hi Fi magazines,
might have resonance / cone break up in the upper mid range / lower
treble,
which makes female voices sound very thin (too much treble)
and this gets so irritating after half an hour (I am VERY fussy) ,
I want to turn off the hi fi set. |
Our Yamaha NS-10M ' NEAR FIELD' SMALL studio monitors produces very
good human voices
(but not as good as our GBP £450 or GBP £650 'almost ULTRA
HIGH END six inch speakers'.)
but it still gets irritating, because there isn't any deep bass
(our GBP £450 or GBP £650 'almost ULTRA HIGH END six inch
speakers' has about two times more bass,
at the expense of slightly lower efficiency, which is still MUCH better
than most domestic six inch speakers.)
(Please note that our Yamaha NS-10M SMALL studio monitors are totally
different
to our Yamaha NS-1000M HUGE studio monitors.)
(If you look at any pictures or videos of recording studios, there
is a good chance you will see a
WHITE COLOUR 6 inch speaker + tweeter in a BLACK cabinet,
and that will be Yamaha NS-10M studio monitors.
There are probably 10 times to 100 times more Yamaha NS-10M studio
monitors in studios,
than ALL the British brands that CLAIMS to produce studio monitors
ADDED TOGETHER. ) |
|
|
| In a nutshell, for your £900 budget, you need to concentrate
on the loud speakers first. |
| When choosing loud speakers, please consider |
| 1. How big is your room ? |
| 2. Does your rooms have carpets ? Carpets affects the sound dramatically. |
3. Do you want a bass drum to sound like a REAL bass drum ?
SMALL 6 inch speakers are useless at imitating /
reproducing HUGE 22 inch kick bass drums
or HUGE 32 inch kettle drums or HUGE double bass
or electric bass guitars. |
Can you hear the BLATANT difference between a Kick
Bass Drum versus Electric Bass guitar ?
Do you want to hear the double bass or electric
bass guitar play a tune with VERY DEEP BASS NOTE ?
Can you hear the BLATANT difference between 32 inch
timpani versus Double Bass ?
Can you hear the BLATANT difference between plucked
Double Bass versus a bowed Double bass ?
Lose the bass counter points on Beethoven pieces,
and you have lost 20% of the music ! |
All of our PUSH PULL valve amplifiers have BIG or EVEN BIGGER output
transformers,
and have EXCELLENT BASS SLAM, and will EASILY drive 8 inch, 10 inch,
12 inch woofers. |
It is a total waste of time testing the bass slam of amplifiers
using SMALL 6 inch speakers, that are TOO SMALL
to imitate / reproduce HUGE 22 inch kick bass drum or HUGE 32 inch
kettle drums. |
If you want to test the bass slam of amplifiers,
you really need MODERN HIGH END HUGE 10 inch or HUGE 12 inch woofers
in HUGE cabinets,
designed for SERIOUS Ultra high end High Fidelity systems. |
It is a total waste of time testing the bass slam of amplifiers,
using PA (public announcement) 12 inch speakers.
Most PA (public announcement) 12 inch speakers are designed for power
handling and high efficiency,
and do NOT have LOUD DEEP BASS,
which will GREATLY REDUCE the power handling
and GREATLY REDUCE the efficiency. |

Speakers with 3 pieces of 6
inch speakers
| Question from eBay member on 31 January 2006 = I wonder if you could
advise. This amp can, I understand, power Monitor Audio Studio 20SE speakers
very well. However can it drive the larger Studio 50s? These have three
6.5 inch drivers and the technical spec says they need an amp producing
35–300 watts. It seems to me though that the power output of valve amps
does not relate very clearly to the ratings for non-valve amps. Your answer
will be much appreciated. Thanks |
Answer = All of our PUSH PULL amplifiers have BIG or HUGE output
transformers
and will EASILY drive the Monitor Audio Studio 50 loudspeakers.. |
The loudest sounds on your CD or record are usually the bass drums
or bass instruments.
How well will your speaker cope with LOUD DEEP bass ? |
Although the Monitor Audio Studio 50 has 3 pieces of six inches speakers,
one of the 6 inch speakers rolls off below 120 hertz, and is 10 decibels
down at 40 hertz. |
When we are talking about deep bass around 40 or 50 hertz,
only 2 of the 6 inch speakers are doing most of the work. |
|
|
| 2 pieces of 6 inch speakers are NOT as big as 1 piece of 12 inch speakers. |
| 2 pieces of 6 inch speakers (stacked vertically) are as TALL as 1 piece
of 12 inch speaker. |
| However, 1 piece of 12 inch speaker is TWICE AS WIDE as 2 pieces of
6 inch speakers (stacked vertically). |
1 PIECE OF 12 INCH SPEAKER IS AS BIG AS 4 PIECES OF 6.5 INCH SPEAKERS
(when you calculate the moving area, without the 'useless' metal frame
or part of the 'useless' cone surround.) |
2 PIECE OF 6 INCH SPEAKER ARE SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN
1 PIECE OF 8 INCH SPEAKERS
(when you calculate the moving area, without the 'useless' metal frame
or part of the 'useless' cone surround.) |
|
|
2 pieces of SMALL 6 inch drive
units
(which is slightly bigger than
1 piece of old fashioned 8 inch speaker)
are TOO SMALL to imitate / reproduce
HUGE 22 inch kick bass drum or
HUGE 32 inch kettle drums or HUGE 32 feet organ pipes
EVEN IF YOU USE 500 WATTS TRANSISTOR
AMPLIFIER. |
2 pieces of SMALL 6 inch speakers
(which is slightly bigger than
1 piece of old fashioned 8 inch speaker)
are too small to fill 20 feet room
with LOUD DEEP BASS,
EVEN IF YOU USE 500 WATTS TRANSISTOR
AMPLIFIER. |
Please do NOT believe the nonsensical hype that the 'typical' modern
6 inch speaker
can handle huge amount of BASS power.
The 'typical' modern 6 inch speaker can only move forward and backwards
by + - 3 millimetres.
The 'typical' old fashioned eight inch speaker (e.g. Kef B200 which
are made by the thousands)
can also move forward and backwards by + - 3 millimetres.
The progress in 40 years is extremely
disappointing !
Since the old fashioned 8 inch speaker is ALMOST TWICE THE SIZE of
the modern 6 inch speakers,
the typical old fashioned 'high end' 8 inch speakers are MUCH MORE
POWERFUL than the typical modern 6 inch speakers.
Some of our speakers uses ULTRA HIGH END modern EUROPEAN 6 inch speakers
that can move forward and backwards by more than + - 5 millimetres,
and should be as powerful as old fashioned 'HIGH END' 8 inch speakers
that can only move forward and backward by 3 millimetres. |
Unless the manufacturer is boosting about
how many millimetres their 6 inch speakers can move forward and backwards,
it is unlikely to be much better than the 'typical' + - 3 millimetres. |
Please be warned that some manufacturers likes to confuse the issue,
by quoting 6 millimetres instead of + - 3 millimetres. |
|
|
|
|
| According to a review, the 2 pieces of six inch woofers are in a sealed
cabinet, and has well dampen bass. |
However, there is a 3 decibels peak at 65 hertz,
followed IMMEDIATELY (very unusual) by 12 decibels per octave roll
off. |
I would have preferred larger magnets or larger cabinets,
which should dampen / remove the 3 decibels resonance peak at 65 hertz,
with a much more gentle bass roll off (much less than 12 decibels per
octave) around 40 hertz to 65 hertz. |
Our ULTRA HIGH END Yamaha NS-1000M studio monitor has
12 inch woofers with HUGE magnets in a HUGE sealed cabinet.
There are NO resonant peak around 65 hertz.
The frequency response falls away VERY VERY GENTLY,
and does not reach the 12 decibels per octave roll off for quite sometime.
This indicate an 'over dampen' bass, produced by the HUGE magnet and
HUGE sealed cabinet. |
Needless to say, the bass of our Yamaha NS-1000M 12 inch speakers
will be TOTALLY DIFFERENT
to the bass of the smaller 6 inch speakers. |
|
|
| According to a review, the review sample of the Studio 50 had the tweeters
connected the wrong way around. |
This created a 10 decibels dip in the frequency response around 2000
hertz.
This is very audible, and you should check if the tweeters at connected
the right way around or not. |
The cross over will alter the phase,
and you MIGHT have to connected the tweeter THE WRONG WAY AROUND to
get the correct results ! |
To make matters more complicated, sometimes, some manufacturers of
drive units make mistakes,
and mark the polarity of the connections WRONGLY. |
THAT IS WHY WE MEASURE THE FREQUENCY RESPONSE
OF OUR 'MODIFIED IN ENGLAND (BEWARE OF FAKES)' SPEAKERS.
That takes time and expensive equipment,
and that is another reason why our modified in England speakers are
so expensive. |
|
|
It is very difficult to control 6.5 inch metal, Kevlar, carbon fibre,
glass fibre
cone break up / resonance / peaks
in the frequency response around 5000 hertz to 8000 hertz. |
Measurements in the review showed that the 6 1/2 inch metal cone has
about 10 decibels peak (which should be audible) around 5500 hertz. |
| Obviously, no amplifier in the world (not even our marvellous amplifiers)
can cure this problem. |
However, our MODIFIED IN ENGLAND (BEWARE OF FAKES) valve amplifiers
have been designed NOT to aggravate
our ultrahigh end 3.5 inch EXOTIC BERYLLIUM METAL DOME MID RANGE
+ ultrahigh end one inch EXOTIC BERYLLIUM METAL DOME TWEETER
(BERYLLIUM METAL DOMES are seldom seen in speakers below GBP £10,000),
and it should help to reduce any problems that you might hear like
sibilance (when a woman say 'hiss', it sounds like 'hissssssk').
Some people do NOT notice how irritating sibilance is.
If you find sibilance irritating, BUY OUR AMPLIFIER ON A 1 MONTH HOME
TRIAL ! |
Money back guarantee (less GBP £30 + GBP £30 shipping cost,
restocking fee etc) that
our MODIFIED IN ENGLAND (BEWARE OF FAKES) valve amplifier will GREATLY
reduce and control sibilance
(when a woman say his, it sounds like hissssssk)
and reduce slightly bright tone caused by the 6.5 inch mid range 10
decibels peak around 5500 hertz. |
|
|
Your tweeter has a 15 decibels peak around ultrasonic 27,000 hertz.
Some DVD audio enthusiast claims that ultrasonic frequency affect the
sound quality,
and they want a 'flat frequency response' to 40,0000 Hertz. |
| The output of your tweeter falls off after 10,000 hertz and is about
3 decibels down at 20,000 hertz. |
I expect the loss in high frequency will tame the harshness
of some bright (too much treble) CD player + some bright (too much
treble) transistor amplifier. |
But, it is very difficult to predict how any amplifier will sound with
your tweeter
(which does not have a flat frequency response),
so you will have to find out for yourself with our one-month home trial. |
|
|
The review sample had
3 decibels peak (which should be audible) at 65 hertz
+ 10 decibels peak (which should be audible) at 5500 hertz for the
6 inch metal cone
+ about 15 decibels peak at an ultrasonic 27,000 hertz (which might
or might not be audible. Some DVD audio enthusiast are suggesting
that speakers should have a flat frequency response to 40,000 hertz.)
+ treble falling off after 10,000 hertz (which should be audible)
+ treble is about 3 decibels down at 20,000 hertz (which should be
audible)
+ the tweeter was connected in such a way
to give a 10 decibels dip in the frequency response
around 2000 hertz (which should be audible)
Please check that your tweeter is connected correctly. |
I appreciate that your British loudspeaker are VERY expensive,
and has received rave review, even though there seems to be a number
of problems. |
Please could you keep an open mind and auditioned our eBay listing
for
hilariously priced GBP £650 MODIFIED IN ENGLAND BY AFFORDABLE
VALVE COMPANY speakers
with 10 inch woofers (about three times the size of six inch speakers)
+ five inch or six inch sophisticated coated paper cones, with lossy
rubbery roll surrounds
+ tweeter with BRITISH NOTCH FILTER TUNED TO THE RESONANT FREQUENCY
OF THE TWEETER (allows the tweeter to go much louder, without overloading,
without becoming harsh). |
I have to apologise that the plastic finish is NOT beauty contest material,
but if you have a limited budget,
it would been better to NOT to waste your limited budget
on EXPENSIVE wood veneer or EXPENSIVE piano finish. |
But I do NOT have to make any excuses for the EXCELLENT ULTRA HIGH
END SOUND,
with superb powerful bass slam, 100% boom free,
superb midrange that tricks you into believing that your favorite singer
is in your room
(when using our eBay listing for our Modified in England Triode Connection
amplifier. BEWARE OF FAKES)
and sweet treble, that is NOT harsh, even at very loud volume,
of our GBP £650 speakers. |
