SquareTrade © AP6.0Large Victorian Pinchbeck Portrait Swivelling Brooch
circa 1860 - 1880
This brooch is probably made from pinchbeck. Pinchbeck was used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an alternative to expensive gold. Pinchbeck is an alloy of zinc and copper and bears a remarkable resemblance to gold.
The portrait is finely painted on silk with a thin ivory backing.
The central portrait measures 45 x 38mm.
The central part of the brooch swivels allowing the back compartment to display another portrait.
The brooch itself measures 65mm by 57mm and weighs 48.6 grams.
The brooch is in very good condition.
