This coloured lithograph is 'French, After Victor Bachereau Reverchon' - Signed "V.Bachereau Pinxit 1883".

A beautifully detailed depiction of Lady Jane Grey pleading for mercy before Queen Mary I.

Lady Jane Grey was a 2nd cousin of Queen Mary I (Jane's GrandMother being Princess Mary, the sister of King Henry VIII, Queen Mary's Father).

When Edward VI (Protestant), Queen Mary's brother and only (legitimate) son of Henry VIII died in July 1533, the Parliament / Ministers and ruling noble families of the time did not want to see a return of a Catholic Monarch to the throne (Mary). They discounted Edward's other sister, Elizabeth because of doubts over her legitimacy (mother, Anne Boleyn) and therefore saw Jane Grey as the 'best' option to securing their plans for a Protestant England. (Jane had in fact been named Fifth in Line of Succession in Henry VIII's Will). She ruled England for nine days only. The Catholic support in the country was stronger than anticipated and Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen at Framlingham Castle (Suffolk). Jane (seen as a threat to future possible uprisings and to the Monarchy) was executed at the Tower of London in 1554.

The detail in the lithograph is stunning ; the fabrics of the throne canopy and wall tapestries, various characters in their sumptuous dress and the glint of armour on the guards. Colours remain strong and vibrant.

I understand that the original is or once was on display at the National Gallery, London (not sure if it is part of their Collection or privately owned).

I also have currently listed the companion lithograph showing Mary Queen of Scots.

Size : Frame : 34 x 27 inches

Condition : There is some foxing as can be seen in the photographs. I believe it remains in its original wood frame. Overall - Very Good.

Other photos are available if required - please email
