Model Summary
This is a model kit of a is a German Sd.Kfz. 2 Kettenkraftrad. There is an optional towing bar that can be used in conjunction with any appropriate jet model (e.g. Horten Ho229 or Me-262).
Brief History of the Kettenkrad
The SdKfz 2, better known as the Kleines Kettenkraftrad HK 101 or Kettenkrad for short (Ketten = tracks, krad = military abbreviation of the German word Kraftrad, the administrative German term for motorcycle).
Kleines Kettenkraftrad was developed by NSU in 1939 as Kettenkraftwagen HK 101 and entered production in late 1940. Only two significant sub-variations of the Kettenkrad were constructed, and production of the vehicle was stopped in 1944, at which time more than 8,500 had been constructed.
It started life as a light tractor for airborne troops. The vehicle was designed to be delivered by Junkers Ju 52 aircraft, being the only gun tractor small enough to fit inside the hold. The Kettenkrad came with a special trailer (Sd.Anh.1) that could be used to improve cargo capacity. Being a tracked vehicle the Kettenkrad could climb up to 24° in sand and even more on hard ground. The vehicle was also used in Russia, the North African theater and in Europe.
Late in the war, Kettenkrads were used by the Luftwaffe as runway tugs for jet aircraft, such as the Me 262 and Me 163. In order to conserve aviation fuel, the aircraft would be towed rather than run the engines while taxiing.
Model Details and Options
A good quality plastic kit, all eight parts come on a sprue (un-painted) and are correctly moulded to fit perfectly. A numbered diagramatic assembly guide is provided. Some good miniature modelling skills are required.
Model Manufacturer Details
This is one model kit from a collection of two secret model kits (Sd.Kfz. 2 Kettenkraftrad and FLAKVIERLING 43 37mm Gun) available from the Popy Projekt Flieger Volume 01 (released in early 2004). As is usual, this volume of models had a very limited production run.
These models in this scale have become very popular and certainly appeal to Wargamers, Diorama Builders and Collectors of World War Two Aviation models. They are the same scale as the Takara World Tank Museum models and look stunning in 12mm figure or "N Gauge" railway dioramas.
