Up for auction is this Near Mint Kodak Retina Reflex Automatic III Camera. It exemplifies a series of new developments in photography circa 1957, some that remain and others that have been surpassed. This camera is in perfect working condition, a rarity given the 7-step complexity of its operation.
Top to bottom this is about the best condition I have seen yet of this camera model. Sounds and acts great. It is operating perfectly and passes all tests with and without film.
All parts are pristine and working perfectly. There are no known issues.
No dings, no dents, no scratches and the lens glass is clean and unscathed. All numbers are fully legible and not rubbed. There is no lint or dust.
These cameras hold up amazingly well and are terrifically well built and made of metal chrome and embossed leather.
The unit is in Near Mint Condition and running beautifully. What a Gem.
This camera has tremendous aesthetic appearance, and is firing properly in all shutter speeds fast and very slow.
- Despite the complexity of design both of the shutters are synchronized still and opening to the correct apertures and closing all the way when they're supposed to!
- This is a great piece for anyone who can appreciate a fine camera specimen and one of the best in photographic history.

- There's quite a history behind the Retina line. Most importantly it represented an unusual move by Kodak to step away from its simplistic systems and develop a tremendously sophisticated system of shutters and innovative "automatic" mechanisms. Once you depress the responsive shutter button it leads to a 7-step process to expose the film to light that you can hear in quick succession. Every time the shutter is depressed. Once the frame counter reaches 1 it must be reset to 36. These parts are all working great. The f-stop is set by the attractive chrome dial under the lens. Very cool and a superb conversation piece.
- I tested the the meter, and it is fully responsive and matches up correctly to be "automatic."
- The view finder shows nothing but crystal clear edge to edge, as if never used or exposed to any environmental effects. Crystal clear not even a single spec of dust in the camera. All other functions are perfect, including shutter switch button (way cool on the front of the camera, and the winder, on the bottom, manual aperture, counter reset, dial settings, door open lever and button, etc. all work beautifully. There is no signs of use on the reel teeth. The camera has seen little use. I just love how it winds manually from the bottom and how much room it leaves on the top of the camera. The winding mechanism is clean and smooth. It has an old Leica feel to it. You can run film through the camera. It's still really cool. I am guaranteeing that this camera matches this description. It is in fine shape and a beautiful working collector's item.
- It's a pretty heavy well built SLR unit that could have been used professionally. Rather I think the previous owner left it at home and used something else.
- Kodak R and D really outdid themselves on this one. It is so beautiful, any manufacturer would do well to make another one like it today. All chrome and leather. The lens reminds me a lot of a mini version of the old chrome Hasselblad style. It is made by the same company that makes Hasselblad Lenses and it is the same type of glass and it is called Synchro Compur.
- These parts are pristine and glimmery. The glass is in perfect as new condition and this has been kept in its special head honcho case, pictured, made of leather and chrome, included.
- I would think just about anyone would like to display this beauty AND THEY CAN...
- Aesthetically, a 10.0 from the front, with no wear, no scratches dings or dents. The rear, I'd give a 10.0. All chrome parts are gleaming. Operationally, I'd give it a 9.5 just because it is not new.
