We constantly get asked for more KFWB airchecks, and we're delighted to offer three classic KFWB jocks from three different years here on Rock-it Radio.
We start with one of the earliest known preserved airchecks of KFWB, Gene Weed from November 23, 1958. Gene joined the staff shortly after it began its Color Radio format at the beginning of 1958, and stayed with the station until it changed to an all news format ten years later. Here's a rare and classic half-hour sample of the early days of KFWB.
Bill Ballance airchecks are highly sought after, and for good reason. You'll find yourself laughing out loud at Bill's timeless one-liners in this half-hour broadcast from March 1, 1960. Sports fans will enjoy the Sports Report, discussing the formation of the American Football League (the Raiders were already causing problems with fellow owners), and the NBA standings (find out how well the Syracuse Nationals and Cincinnati Royals were doing).
Finishing off this disk is an 18 minute segment from Wink Martindale. He may be best known outside of L.A. as a Game Show host, but in Southern California, Wink was well known as a rock jock. By the time of this broadcast on June 2, 1965, KFWB was starting to fall from glory. KHJ's Boss Radio format had been on the air for two months, and made an immediate impact in the L.A. radio market. Wink uses lots of time tones and noisemakers to try and generate excitement, but frankly it didn't fit his style. This is a fascinating snapshot of mid-60's radio.
Here is the playlist that you will hear along with the ads and DJ's on this digitally remastered recording of how Top 40 Radio used to be.
