Book Description: R Hastings, London, 1841. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 8vo - 9 Inches. A presentable two volume set of this seminal work on Texas, both bound in modern oatmeal cloth with gilt spine titles on dark burgundy morocco spine labels. Minimal shelfwear. One volume a little taller than the other. Inscribed on the title page of Vol in ink 'To R S Pritchard Esq, with the Author's Complmts (date illegible)'. Small closed tear over date. Some of inscription partially erased. lii, 378 ; vi, 548 pages. 2 maps of four only. Otherwise textually complete. Paper a bit brittle leaving several pages with closed tears to the margins, occasional with small loss. Vol I - First four leaves silked along fore margin, two with repaired closed tears. Next eight leaves with closed tears into margin, one with a detached section of margin, but not affecting text. Final two leaves silked at margins with some minor marginal repairs. Missing map of republic and map of Texas. Map of Matagorda Bay with minor marginal loss, not affecting text. Private library ink stamp to pages 121, 225, 281 in Vol I and pages 33, 57, 185, 217, 265, 393, 481, and 513 in Vol II. Pencil number to verso of each title page. Vol II - first three leaves and pages 145-146, and 547-548 silked to margins. Slight loss to margin of page 19-20. Overall a defective and somewhat brittle, though restored copy of a scarce work, and rarely found inscribed by the author.
