A most beautiful and rare book - an essential work by the famous artist-illustrator Kay Nielsen, First Edition, 1914.
Book: EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON: OLD TALES FROM THE NORTH. ILLUSTRATED BY KAY NIELSEN. HODDER AND STOUGHTON, no date but 1914. A lovely copy in modern facsimile binding replicating publisher's original ornate gilt stamped dark blue cloth with decorated spine and cover. Original decorated end papers. Superbly and profusely illustrated by Kay Nielsen with 25 beautiful plates tipped-in on blue-and-gold edged cardstock mounts, each under a captioned tissue guard. The text is printed on high quality thick paper. Profusely decorated and illustrated also with numerous black and white designs, drawings and vignettes - almost every page has a drawing or a decoration. Decorated endpapers.
(In my determination to provide excellent and detailed book descriptions, I have decided to examine each book twice - this book has been reviewed with care, the description is below, along with as many photographs as possible. Please do be patient - the photographs will take some time to appear... )
Book condition: A lovely copy. Externally nr FINE. Minor wear, flaws, tarnishing to giltwork, minor scuffing. Internally VG+/almost NR FINE, free end papers and pastedown browned and darkened as is typical, small discreet gift inscription on front free endpaper ( ..which blends in with the black and gold designs and is rather lovely and romantic, dated 1935..) and a small dark bookplate (?) just near this inscription, siting an old New York Studios address. Light typical age creasing to a few tissue guards, paper edges slightly darkened and slightly soiled due to shelf exposure, also as is typical, a few minor finter marks to corners of some pages and plate mounts - the last stated for the sake of accuracy, this is an overall lovely, bright and clean copy. All of the superb plates are in fine condtition without creases or tears -please do see the photographs, below. A wonderful book, would certainly make a very special gift. Many images below!
