 The Karrimor Panther is great for walking holidays.   It is designed to keep the weight as close to your back as possible and is therefore tall and narrow. The bag has two main compartments, the upper one has a draw cord fastening at the top, and the lower one is ideal for your sleeping bag with a zipped opening at the front.  A removable divider separates the two compartments.

When carrying things on your back you shouldn’t carry more than a third of your body weight and the heaviest thing you carry should be as close to your back as possible at just below shoulder height.  Lighter things should be lower down and / or further away from your back.  Hence it is generally advisable to carry your tent pegs in the top part of the bag as close to your back as possible whilst your sleeping bag is in the lower compartment and your roll mat fits through the base load straps at the front.  Medium weight things are carried above shoulder height.  

The lid has a zipped pocket and there are two zipped and pleated side pockets.  Use of these side pockets is optional. Climbers or people using walking poles may prefer to leave these side pockets empty to give greater freedom for arm and elbow movement. 

The bag has two compression straps down each side. I find these useful for holding your tent poles in place with the bottom ends resting in the lower mesh pockets.  These stash pockets are also useful for holding things like water bottles and waterproofs.

Your walking poles or possibly an ice axe can be attached using the elastic pole carrier. 

The elasticised chest strap stops the two carry straps from sliding off your shoulders, leaving your hands free. The padded straps, and super wick padded back with central ventilation are all designed to keep you cool and comfortable.  The padded hip belt helps to take the load off your shoulders.   Don't forget when adjusting your straps, the trick is to rest the weight of the bag onto your hips and straight onto your legs to avoid pain on your shoulders.

No rucksack is waterproof so the rain cover is essential for keeping your gear dry.
