Publisher's Note
A hilarious look at the world of professional golf from Gary McCord, television's number one golf commentator and iconoclast.
Gary McCord has been playing the PGA Tour for the last twenty-three years, and broadcasting with CBS Sports for the last ten. His success in tournaments has been, shall we say, mixed, but not so his success in television. "McCord is the most entertaining golf commentator to come along in years", says The New York Times. "Quick, knowledgeable, colorful and irreverent - a talented and very smart man". During all those years playing and talking, "a number of strange and interesting things have transpired", he admits, and he brings some of them to us now, along with his unique greens-eye view of the world of professional golf: the Tour, the personalities, the culture, the very sights and smells. In these pages, you'll find people named Norman, Pavin, Watson, Mickelson, Daly, and Nicklaus, but also the legendary mentor Mac O'Grady, who teaches McCord how to "become the ball" a little to literally; Fairway Louie and Unemployed Lloyd, denizens of the semi-mystical San Luis Rey Downs; and a combat-booted man named Demon, who provides an unforgettable pairing in the U.S. Open qualifer. In these pages, "The Range" weaves its magic; the British Open its spectacle; Qualifying School - "golf's version of hell week" - its terror; and the Masters - well, of course, McCord has a thing or two to say about the Masters.

Industry reviews
McCord, professional golfer, CBS commentator and coauthor of Golf for Dummies, now offers his view of the players, the courses and his experiences over the years. McCord has an opinion about everything, and while usually he's blunt and honest, occasionally his search for the good line takes him a bit far. "The great thing about a U.S. Open is that anybody can enter, as long as he has a two handicap or less, or he can get a fake verification from a local pro at a course that has sand greens and three-wheeled electric carts. Usually these deals are negotiated at the local racetrack after a furious day of losing on the long shots, and the pro is more open to a bribe." The routine of golf he makes less so through humor ("I have hunted the wayward golf ball in many streams and ecologically sensitive areas inhabited by hunter-gatherer celebrities."). Even a bum year of tour tedium is described in wry, self-effacing style "I was awash in the urinal of life and limited success was now an exaggeration." This is a breezy, easy insider's look at a sport. It's probably best enjoyed not by spectators but by players, people who know the pure joy and unmitigated aggravation of trying to get a tiny ball in a tiny hole 400 yards away. (Apr.)
