Joy Roman Malay Quarter Cape Town Oil Painting

Description: An excellent townscape, oil on artist's board, signed "Joy Roman", and dated '60 and framed - approx 28 X 38 inches (71.12 X 96.52cm). This is an excellent South African oil dating from the late 20th Century Retro period. The townscape depicts a contemporary geometric impressionist study of buildings titled "Malay Quarter" situated in Cape Town, South Africa. The Cape Malay Quarter, or 'Bo-Kaap' which sprawls along the slopes of Signal Hill, bordering Cape Town, presents a scenario of enduring history and culture. The establishment of the Cape Malay people evolved with the Islamic influences which became their religion and culture during the years of slavery in Cape Town in the 18th century and beyond. The 'Malay' term is understood to have been used by the Colonial settlers to describe this growing Islamic faith among the Cape slaves and their descendants, and not, as commonly thought, their origins. The artist has used thick oils to create this colourful study of a small township with rendered walls and terracotta roof lines. The painting has wonderful texture the artist having used blues, reds, whites, and burnt yellows reflecting the the architecture of this small ssettlement. A wonderful piece of creative art. The painting is titled verso. The work is signed "Joy Roman" lower left.

Framing: Contemporary plain moulded Pine. Finish: Cream painted.

Condition: The painting is in good condition and perhaps would benefit from a light clean. The frame has a few marks and discolouring consistent with age.
