 DETAILS: (Mumbai): Bombay Natural History Society, 1988. First edition. Rebound in tan cloth. 696, 31pp. Illustrated with b/w plates, and 1 colour plate. Large 8vo (slightly larger than standard sized book). This is a heavy item weighing over 1.25kg with packaging.

CONDITION: Very Good to Near Fine (see table below for details). Rebound, with newer endpapers. Some rubbing to boards and spine. A little sunning to pages and plates, otherwise in solid condition. *Photo(s) given of actual book.

CONTENTS: A volume from the celebrated Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. The Society was established in 1883 and the first Journal was published in 1886. This is Volume 85, and was the working copy of S. Dillon Ripley, eminent ornithologist, ecologist and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, and a sometime contributor to the Journal (he is the co-author of the first article listed below). 

The volume contains all 3 original parts, and is filled with articles on varying subjects - some are stand-alone works, others are parts/starts of ongoing series in the Journals. Main articles include: Birds of the Visakhapatnam Ghats, Andhra Pradesh (part 2); Tendencies in North-South Preferences in the Orientation of Silkworm; Observations on the Reproductions and Associated Phenomena in the Male Fruit Bat; The Butterflies of the Nilgiri Mountains of Southern India (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera); Breeding Biology of the Indian Reef Heron; The Butterflies of Sikkim; Destruction of Spawning Grounds of Mahseer and other Fish in Garhwal Himalayas; Phayre's Leaf Monkey in Cachar; Life History of the Common Indian Tree Frog.

The larger articles are supplemented by more concise notes (generally around a page or two in length) on a variety of topics, including: Occurrence of an Albino Rat-tailed Bat in the Indian desert; Notes on Crocodile locomotion; The artificial incubation of eggs of the Common Cat Snake; Feeding pattern of an egret.

The volume includes the contents pages at the front of each part. Many of the main articles and a few of the shorter ones include illustrations and photo plates. This volume includes several sketch plates, plus a couple of photo plates. Aside from some general sunning, both text and plates are in solid condition.
