 DETAILS: (Mumbai): Bombay Natural History Society, 1987. First edition. Rebound in tan cloth. 760pp. Illustrated with b/w plates, and 2 colour plates. Large 8vo (slightly larger than standard sized book). This is a heavy item weighing over 1.25kg with packaging.

CONDITION: Very Good to Near Fine (see table below for details). Rebound, with newer endpapers. Some rubbing to boards and spine. A little sunning to pages and plates, otherwise in solid condition. *Photo(s) given of actual book.

CONTENTS: A volume from the celebrated Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. The Society was established in 1883 and the first Journal was published in 1886. This is Volume 84, and was the working copy of S. Dillon Ripley, eminent ornithologist, ecologist and former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, and a sometime contributor to the Journal. 

The volume contains all 3 original parts, and is filled with articles on varying subjects - some are stand-alone works, others are parts/starts of ongoing series in the Journals. Main articles include: Survey of the Freshwater Turtles of India (part 2); The Butterflies of the Nilgiri Mountains of Souther India; Sundarbans Honey and the Mangrove Swamps; Polychaeta of the Pulicat Lake (Tamil Nadu); Birds of Deforested Hills; Interspecific Behaviour of Free-Ranging Rhesus of Tughlaqabad; Mating Behaviour and Mate Choice by Wild Axis Deer in Sri Lanka; Monkeys of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India; Fishes of Mundanthurai Wildlife Sancutary, Tamil Nadu; Status of Wildlife and Habitat Conservation in Andhra Pradesh.

The larger articles are supplemented by more concise notes (generally around a page or two in length) on a variety of topics, including: Occurrence of the Bicoloured Leaf-nosed Bat; Sighting of a Rusty Spotted Cat; The Osprey preying on a Gull; A list of the snakes of the Bhavnagar District, Gujarat State; Breeding of the king cobra in captivity.

The volume includes the contents pages at the front of each part. Many of the main articles and a few of the shorter ones include illustrations and photo plates. This volume includes several sketch plates, plus a couple of photo plates, two in colour. Aside from some general sunning, both text and plates are in solid condition.
