The Devils Teardrop - HB
Review
'Deaver is a terrific storyteller, and he takes the reader on a rollercoaster of suspense, violence and mystery' -- Susanna Yager, Daily Telegraph 'Jeffery Deaver's fiendish new suspense thriller ... Amazing as it sounds, Deaver makes the intellectual puzzle the most thrilling part of his high-anxiety drama, which twists, turns and leaves us weak' -- The New York Times Book Review 'Principal characters unusually vivid and sympathetic... Rapidly paced, wholly engrossing tale' -- Publisher's Weekly 'An engrossing thriller...cogent plotting, smooth characterisation and (best of all) psychological profiling of his villains is all nonpareil' -- The Times 'Another winner' -- Crime Time review 'A top-rate thriller that will have you reading well into the early hours of the morning' -- Bolton Evening News 'The master of the plot twist is back' -- Coventry Evening Telegraph
Deaver has proved himself to be one of the most accomplished of current thriller practitioners, and The Bone Collector was his breakthrough novel. But his customary protagonist Lincoln Rhyme makes only a walk-on appearance in this new novel: here FBI forensic document expert Parker Kincaid is caught up in a dizzying narrative that tests both his scientific knowledge and his survival ability. When a man fires a silence machine gun through a paper bag in a crowded Metro station, this is a prelude to an audacious demand: if the mayor of Washington DC does not pay $20 million, the gunman will strike again. When the brains behind this operation is killed in a hit and run accident, it's up to Kincaid to stop the implacable gun man from killing again and again. Kincaid is not as strikingly characterized as the eccentric Rhyme, but he is a more than a serviceable hero, and the nimble plotting that has served Deaver well in the past is well to the fore here. Another winner. (Kirkus UK)
The Vanished Man - HB
Review
When a gifted illusionist turns his hand to violent death, The Vanished Man is only one of a series of classic conjuring tricks that paralysed forensic investigator Lincoln Rhyme finds himself having to understand. More important even than the details of technique which Lincoln and his partner Amelia are taught by young illusionist Kara are the conjuror's habits of mind--misdirection piled on deceit piled on false leads. It is not just sleight of hand that deceives the eye; it is where the eye is tricked into looking. Is the killer who calls himself Malerik just after a sequence of showy violent deaths, or is that what he wants Lincoln to think?
This is an impressive addition to Deaver's much-praised sequence of novels about Lincoln and Amelia simply because they find themselves up against an equally intelligent killer with radically different ways of thinking. Their habits of logic and science and legwork are of limited use against someone who constantly stretches the limits of the improbable. Jeffrey Deaver has always been an ingenious thriller writer and this book returns to the sardonic wit of his earliest work as he too engages in endless trickery and confusion of our expectations. --Roz Kaveney

The Blue Nowhere - PB
Wyatt Gillette is a computer hacker, brought out of prison to assist the police in finding a killer who is targeting his victims using computers. The mysterious Phate has taken computer role-playing games too far - to the extent that taking a human life has become a matter of accumulating points. Gillette and Frank Bishop, the detective in charge of the investigation, must work together in the face of numerous baffling diversions and booby traps to find Phate and his only friend and ally, Shawn. Deaver is a master of the plot twist and this thriller is as gripping as its predecessors, with characters who are refreshingly different from the cliches of the genre. Most memorable, however, is Deaver's evocation of cyberspace - the blue nowhere of the title. It's a terrifying world where you can never tell for certain who you're speaking to and every detail of your life is open to a skilled criminal, and Deaver manages to make it comprehensible and mysterious at the same time. A real achievement. (Kirkus UK)
The Cold Moon - PB (not shown in photo)
It's the night of the full Cold Moon - the month of December according
