Picture yourself sitting on a windowsill, looking out at the gray skies as the cold rain streams down the panes, at once both foreboding and soothing. Hear that music in your head? 32 Records does and it has done a commendable job in compiling the perfect soundtrack for your rainy afternoon of relaxing and daydreaming. As to be expected, the mood here is soft and dusky, weighted heavily in favor of the bluesy ballad ("Round Midnight," "Blue in Green") without any startling thunderclaps to harsh your mellow. While none of these classic cuts are the most famous rendition of such, each track is a true standard that always conjures a gentle, moody vibe to get you through until you can go back outside and play. Highlights include Hank Jones' lyrical read of Monk's "Ruby My Dear," Houston Person and Ron Carter's peaceful duet on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," and Warren Vache's darkly moving "I Can't Get Started."
