Jasha (losif Robertovich) Heifetz is the figure of great eminence in the violin playing art. The name of Heifetz became symbolic and meaningful together with such personalities as Einstein in physics, Churchill in policy, Ulanova in ballet. Being nearly of the same age with the 20th century (born in 1901, Vilnius — died in 1987, Los Angeles) Heifetz was brought up i jn the St Petersburg Conservatoire (class of the famous professor L. Auer) and later occurred to be the citizen of the USA (from 1917). The wonderful violinist seemed to embody the highest ideals of professional merits, artistic and life success. When a child, Heifetz was considered to be an infant prodigy, striking everyone by playing just the small children's violin and during his maturity he continued to be the public favourite everywhere and every time, doubtless authority for colleagues-musicians. Heifetz left the brilliant trace in art by his recordings, by reminiscenses and legends about him together with numerous transcriptions for violin (more than 100) intended very often for performing "an encore". These transcriptions have broadened significantly the violin repertoire of marvellous music. The collection of Heifetz's transcriptions reveals the Russian accent and musician's interest to the composers-contemporaries. The violin sounding stained the music by Gershwin, Rakhmaninov, Prokofiev, Khachaturyan with special charm thus making it enjoy the additional popularity.
