Japanese Culture Book

Kama - Tea Ceremony Iron Kettles

This is a very beautiful book exhibiting cast iron tea kettles used in the Japanese tea ceremony.

The esteemed tea master Rikyu said in a poem that the most important thing needed to make tea is a kettle.  The history of kettles begins when the monk Myoe of  Kozan-ji Temple had a kettle made by a kettle master in Ashiya, Ongagun, in the then Chikuzen province of Kyushu.  Onto it the words "ten virtues of tea" were molded.  While the aforementioned kettle was made at the end of the Kamakura period, the actual demand for kettles comes after the succeeding Muromachi period when the kettle used in the tea ceremony were made in various parts of Japan.

The book contains many large image of important tea kettles, some with close up details, and attempts to compare representative samples of various types and styles.

This is an important reference for anyone involved with the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, or anyone with an interest in fine hand made cast iron craft objects.
