A Large Japanese Ink Drawing of a Shishi Dog. 18th. Century. Edo Period. 

15 1/2 x 14 3/4 ins. (39.3 x 37.4 cms) Last year we sold a number of drawings from this series. We had overlooked this drawing which is definitely the last one! Originally the whole series had been mounted as a makimono scroll but sections of it were damaged including the colophon and the drawings had been separated. The colophon recorded the date as "The 14th Year of Horeki, year of the Monkey, mid summer, 9th. day". This year corresponds to 1764. The original of the colophon was sold with one of the drawing and is no longer in our possession. Shishi, or Chinese Lion Dogs, are traditional guardians of Buddhism and are often treated by artists in an affectionate and light-hearted manner. As can be seen from the photos the paper is made of several sections pasted together. Condition is very good, there is minor wear to the right hand edge.

This is the quickest, easiest and most convenient payment method.
We have our own card processing facilities without the need for any payment "intermediary" or "service provider".
Your card details can be sent to us in total safety using our secure server. 

Other payment methods: 
1. Internet bank transfer (UK customers). 
2. Personal cheques (known UK customers only). 
3. Bank / wire transfer (for international customers). 
4. Cash. You are welcome to visit us to collect your purchase and pay cash upon collection. If you wish to pay by this method please let us know immediately after the end of the auction so that we do not waste time and materials packing the item. 
5. Paypal. Please note that "PayPal is only a Payment Service Provider" and we recommend that all customers read and understand Paypal's terms and conditions before choosing to pay by this method. If payment is made by Paypal, we must send the item by a trackable courier postal service. The UK postage estimate we have given in this listing is only for standard postage, assuming payment is made by a method other than Paypal.

A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for ten days or a month and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should probably be avoided. We do not sell for other dealers; we sell only our own stock.

  3.  SHIPPING - POSTAGE & PACKING

Note: it is now compulsory for us to enter a UK postage amount when listing items on eBay. Although we can estimate the postage cost, the exact amount will not be known until the item is packed and weighed; we charge you the actual postage cost - we do not charge you an estimated amount. 

Postage - we do not inflate our postage costs; we quote to you what the Post Office quotes to us.
The estimate for UK postage that we have given for this item is for the standard postal service. Where payment is made by Paypal, we are obliged to send the item by a trackable courier service.
We prefer the Royal Mail for inland and overseas shipping, and can use any of their express or guaranteed services if required. Other courier services can also be used and estimates of shipping costs can be quoted at any time. 

Packing Materials: For many items we make no charge for packing materials. Although we re-use as much packing material as possible, we may make a nominal charge for new materials used. Any such charge will be at or below our cost price.

Handling & Packing: The packing of fragile items takes time and care yet we make no handling charge for this service. 

Whenever possible, multiple purchases are packed together to minimise shipping costs.

   4. INSURANCE

• This is optional and is charged at 2% of the total cost with no minimum charge.
  
  

• The insurance cost is automatically added to the total amount due unless we are advised that insurance is not required.

• We cannot offer insurance for items sent overseas by surface mail.
