Gion Ichisuzu
Gion is an area of Kyoto which is famous for the preservation of traditional architecture and entertainment.
It has two special Geisha enclaves: Gion-Kobu and Gion Higashi.
This book is a beautiful photographic essay which shows many aspects of the life
of a Maiko, and her passages to Geisha.
As a group, Maiko and Geisha are known as "Geiko"
(Those who entertain) and Maiko can be regarded as apprentice Geisha. It
is erroneous in the extreme to regard the activity of Maiko or Geisha as
salacious. Their lives revolve entirely around the pursuit of perfection
of various traditional Japanese contemplative and performance
arts.
This book is very generously illustrated with
color photographs, and is printed on lovely matt lacquered, thick page stock.
