Japanese Kokeshi dolls were born in the hot spring resorts of the Tohoku district in northern Japan, and have been handed down through the years.
There are two main types of Kokeshi dolls; Traditional Kokeshi and Creative Kokeshi.
Traditional Kokeshi has such specific standards, and they vary according to the origin of the doll.
Their painted decorations, patterns, forms, and shapes are all different according to where they come from.
The art of making Traditional Kokeshi is passed on from one to another in the master-apprentice system.
Every apprentice creates their own style in time, while they still carry some characteristics of their master’s craftsmanship.
Creative Kokeshi developed later.
They differ from traditional Kokeshi,
and are "Kokeshi doll" that are neither the region nor the restriction, and produced in the writer's free conception. |
