A rare Japanese coin - Edo period KANEI-TSUHO 4 Mon (1768) 21 Nami

 *

A rare Edo period Japanese coin - Shogun Tokugawa Ieharu (1760~1786) - KANEI-TSUHO 4 Mon (1768) 21 Nami (waves)

A very collectable Kanei-tsuho 4 Mon coin dating from Meiwa 5 (1768) of the Edo period, under the Shogun Tokugawa Ieharu (1760~1786). On the obverse (front), clear Kanji characters KAN-EI-TSU-HO and a wide rim. On the reverse, a unique pattern of 21 Nami or 'waves'. There isn't a mintmark, so the coin probably comes from Fukagawa, Kameido-mura, Edo (Tokyo); this was the original mint of the 'new' 4 Mon Nami (wave) pattern coins.

From 1768 the Tokugawa Shogunate started minting 4 Mon with Nami or 'waves' on the back. This was to help distinguish them from the earlier Kanei-tsuho. The first minting was in 1768 and the coins had 21 Nami. From 1769 this was changed to 11 Nami. The newer 4 Mon coins were a little larger than the 1 Mon; often 27 or 28mm. They were first minted at the Fukagawa mint in Edo (Tokyo). From 1866 local domains received permission to mint their own 4 Mon coins. These were often iron and had a minting mark on the reverse.

Good example of this very collectable Japanese coin. A light patina to both sides (slightly green in places) and wear to edges. Some small casting marks around the rim. Characters and Nami are clear.

Size: 27.0mm

Weight: approx. 5g

Date: Edo period - from Meiwa 5 (1768)

Denomination: 4 Mon

Mint: maybe Fukagawa, Edo (Tokyo)

Metal: probably brass (AE)

This item comes from my personal, extensive collection of Japanese coins. I’m a British ex-pat who has been in Japan for over 15 years; and collecting for more than 12 years. I’m an enthusiastic hobby collector with a passion for ancient Japanese coinage. Most of my old coins come from authentic antique or coin dealers in Japan. More special coins will be offered in the near future, so please save my auction site.

And bid with confidence: all coins are genuine antiquities or circulated coins, NOT copies. Most coins that I offer are in a good, clean condition. If a coin is uncleaned or is marked in any way, I will advise you of its state. I always try to be clear as to a coin’s background or origin. New eBay seller with excellent buyer and seller feedback – trustworthy, honest and reliable. I will provide quick, first-class service if you take the opportunity to buy from me.
