A Japanese Edo period KANEI-TSUHO 1 Mon(1668~) - Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna (1641~1680) - Kameido-mura mint, Edo (Tokyo)
Usually it's difficult to place KANEI-TSUHO to the mint and date of issue. This coin has the mintmark BUN for Kameido-mura, Edo, Tokyo. The style and the stroke marks of the four characters KAN-EI-TSU-HO can vary, but this mintmark is clear and easy to assign. A great example of a popular Edo period coin used by Japanese for over 200 years until the Meiji period! Examples of Kanei-tsuho were minted across Japan with different mintmarks, variations in metal content, strokes and quality.
Kanei-tsuho minted before 1668 are known as 'old Kanei'. These have the same four characters KAN-EI-TSU-HO, but are generally smaller and don't have the mintmark on the reverse. They are quite difficult to distinguish and attribute to a particular year and mint. 'New' Kanei-tsuho are easier to attribute. There is often a mintmark, and characters like HO can be different to the old style.
Kanei-tsuho 1 Mon coins were minted from 1668 under the rule of Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna (1641~1680). He was just 10 years old when he came to power, so 5 regents were chosen to rule in his name. One of the first decisions that he had to face was the 'Keian Uprising' and the masterless samurai called 'Ronin'. This period was exceedingly turbulent, with many important events from uprisings to great fires. A coin from this era is very collectable.
Good example of this very collectable Edo period coin. Clear characters and mintmark BUN. A light patina, especially around the characters and mintmark. Slight wear to edges and a few small casting marks on both sides, especially on the rim.
