PRIDE AND PREJUDICE By JANE AUSTEN illustrated by HUGH THOMSON Published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd (London) in 1894. First edition thus. The first Hugh Thomson illustrated edition. Original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt. Page edges gilt. Coated endpapers. Frontispiece and numerous illustrations to text throughout by Hugh Thomson. Pages [xxvii] 476. Boards are in very good condition. Lovely bright decoration to front and spine. Some rubbing to the spine tips, edges and corners. A few nicks/short tears to the cloth at the spine tips including some slight chipping at the foot of the spine. Some very mild rubbing to gilt at edge of upper board. Mild rubbing to gilt page edges. Light, patchy discolouration/rubbing to lower board. Slight spine lean. Internally there is foxing to the frontispiece, tissue-guard and title page with one or two foxing spots on the other preliminary pages. There is some darkening to the central margins of page 76-77 (see last photo). There does not appear to be any obvious reason for this and it is not replicated elsewhere in the book. Otherwise just the very occasional, small mark to the odd page (nothing at all significant) and generally the pages are very clean and in excellent condition.
The book is now protected in a removable acetate dust jacket (not shown in the photos). "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." Regarded as the one of the most beautifully illustrated Austen novels and in very nice condition. Please contact me if you have any queries or require additional photos.
