Description: An exquisite townscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "J.W. Milliken" and dating circa 1920. Framed - approx 20 X 16 inches (50.8 X 40.64cm). This is an exquisite English School watercolour dating from the early 20th Century period. The townscape depicts a beautiful colourful study of a busy market day in "Candebee", Normandy France. A classic English School Grand Tour piece, beautifully depicted in a soft relaxed manner. This colourful scene sees women in bright dresses and pinafores shoping for their wares. Canopies shade baskets of flowers lining the cobbled street. The tall multi-storied Medieval buildings cast shade across the street, leading the eye toward the tall Gothic spire of the church in the background. Beautifully depicted with a 'free hand'. The work is signed "J.W. Milliken" lower right.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1920.
Artist Biography: "James W. Milliken" British (fl. 1887 - 1930) - prolific artists of landscape, genre town and villagescapes.
Framing: Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a gilt mount.
Condition: The painting retains wonderful rich colours, having a little foxing to the sky area, otherwise in fine original condition. The frame has an antiqued finish with minor wear consistent with age.
