Studies, Book of Romans, Paul, Pauline Theology
Interpretation of Paul's letter to the Romans has undergone a 'paradigm
shift' in recent years. Whereas previous generations of scholars had
assumed that the justification of the individual was central to the
epistle, and that Paul's opponents were legalistic Jews or Judaizers,
there has emerged a new concern to interpret Romans as an exposition
of 'the righteous purpose of God both for Jew and Gentile as fulfilled
in Jesus Christ revealed in the gospel'. Perhaps the most significant
contribution to the reassessment of the epistle has been the positive
re-evaluation of first century Judaism. The previously held characterization
of Judaism as a religion of legalistic works-righteousness has been
challenged, if not replaced, by a renewed appreciation of the place
within it of the covenant and the role of repentance and forgiveness.
The ground work of this revision was chiefly laid by G.F. Moore in 1927.
Yet, Moore's work did not yield a different perspective on Paul, except
to draw the conclusion that Paul had misunderstood Judaism. It was Krister
Stendahl's provocative essay in 1963, however, that played a significant
role in reshaping the direction of Pauline studies
