Upon his father's death, his mother sent Lincoln Ross to relations in England. His Uncle Richard, having no son, makes Lincoln his heir even going so far as to changing his name so that the Burnett name doesn't die out. He is now known as Lincoln Ross Burnett, Viscount of Cambury.

Lincoln feels the need to tie up loose ends, and so with his Aunt Henry and his Cousin Edith he returns to Scotland. Lincoln will be presenting his cousin in her debut season, while at the same time looking for a wife for himself.

Melissa MacGregor's family are neighbors of Lincoln. Just before Melissa is due to leave for her London debut she meets Lincoln. What happens in London is a hair-pulling escapade. Melissa is given sixteen reasons why she shouldn't marry Lincoln. All sixteen of her uncles don't want her to marry Lincoln. It's funny how in life if you don't learn by your mistakes you're doomed to repeat them. It seems that Melissa's uncles don't ask questions before they leap to conclusions. Mainly that Lincoln is crazy and Melissa is better off without him.
