On a Friday evening in October 2004, the volatile union between two always-controversial artists, R. Kelly and Jay-Z, famously came to a crashing halt before thousands on stage in New York's Madison Square Garden. Kelly stormed off the stage, and accusations of pepper-spray attacks, guns in the audience, and superstar insecurity flew. Lawyers became involved, and the fight was on. In happier times, merely days earlier, Kelly and Jay-Z released their second and (barring a reconciliation of epic proportions) final collaboration, UNFINISHED BUSINESS. While a clash of egos may have dissolved the duo, those enlarged egos are a result of titanic talents; when combined in a recording studio, R. Kelly's honeyed vocals perfectly balanced Jay-Z's hyper-confident rhymes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS is packed with infectious beats and a playful, joyful attitude. Most of the tracks have a surprisingly light, airy feel, and, even when the pair are taking aim at rivals, as on "Stop," there's a buoyant vibe to it. R. Kelly & Jay-Z made an appealing match, and when it worked, it truly glowed, as evidenced by this record.
