About Japanese Noh theatre:
It is one of the classical form of Japanese theatre. Noh and Kyogen, which is less serious, are often played together in traditional theatre houses in large Japanese cities. A long time ago, formal representations of Noh/Kyogen lasted all day long, with several serious plays of Noh, with Kyogen plays in between during the last days for the assistance to take a break and get a chance to laugh.
Noh actors are always male (even those dressed as women) and normally share the scene with an orchestra of traditional Japanese musicians and a chorus. Actors express their poetry with old language (even Japanese people cannot understand them and must read the story on a written manuscript) chanted with trailing and emphatic syllables. Noh and Kyogen actors often wear this mask to help depict the character they play and put emphasis on the key elements of the story.
Apart from devil masks (which are very expressive), most of the Noh/Kyogen masks are neutral, which implies that the actor must show emotions only with subtle body moves. The making of Noh and Kyogen masks is an important Japanese art form on its own and many masks (particularly dramatic masks of devils and gods) are collected by Japanese and foreign people who like the culture.
