TITLE.  "WOODLAND MAIDEN"

DESCRIPTION.  James Barnes watercolours and oils command high prices and sell well at auctions and galleries - and this is one of the best large watercolours I have seen for a while. It is a good size with good colouring and subject and signed. Very clean bright colours - lots of detail - within the trees and foliage. Fresh colours Very sentimental yet atmospheric. Nice tonality.   A sublime British watercolour - that was most likely an exhibited work at the Walker Art Gallery where he exhibited widely.  This is a particularly fine example of a work which dates to 1876 and which has such excellent authenticity and provenance.

A delightful painting.

PROVENANCE -  Dreweatts Neates auction rooms.

CONDITION.   Watercolour and gouache on paper.  Image size 36cm by 48cm and in excellent condition.

FRAME.   Housed in  gilt wooden gallery frame  61cm by 74cm.

BIOGRAPHY  JAMES BARNES (fl 1870-1901). James Barnes was a landscape and genre painter, working in Liverpool. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. He is listed in Wood's, Victorian Painters: Dictionary of British Art.

He exhibited a staggering 131 works at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, during his lifetime. A painter of great skill, his work has a wonderful ethereal feeling, as well as the genuine touch of the Liverpool school at this period. He appears to have spent his entire working life in Liverpool, and his commitment to the Walker Art Gallery is obvious. He exhibited at the principal galleries, both in the provinces and London, including the Royal academy.
