"Somerso" Technique ~ Circa 1960

Large and finely crafted vase in the form of a fish, circa 1960.

This piece was designed by Flavio Poli for the Venetian - Murano glassworks of Seguso Vetri D'Arte and probably blown and sculpted by Livio Seguso, considering its beautiful quality.

Size: 12" tall / 11" wide / 3" deep

Weight: 8 lbs. 5 oz.

This figural modernist vase is quite stylish and was made in the "Somerso" technique, which is very difficult to achieve to perfection. This fish vessel is a fine example of the technique and is of the highest quality.

The fish has a hollow interior, for use as a vase, which is formed of a wine red - maroon colored glass. This, in turn, is surrounded by three thick separate layers of light yellow, darker yellow-orange, and finally clear optic glass.

The eyes and lips were applied, and the shape of the piece blown and sculpted while the glass was molten. The form is perfect and the glass has no internal defects, which is one of the hardest things to achieve with the somerso technique.

This piece is in wonderful condition with no damage, no scratches, no chips, and no repairs. The ground and polished bottom has light wear, not visible when displayed and mentioned for accuracy.

The inside surfaces of the vase area are clean with no deposits or sickness and the piece looks never to have been used with water in it.
