Italeri 1/72 Bishop Mk I

Self Propelled Artillery

Model Kit

20mm Scale

Ref: IT7054

Brand new and unbuilt.

The Bishop was a self propelled 25 Pounder based on a Valentine chassis. Fulfilling a need for mobile artillery on the fast moving battlefields of North Africa the Bishop first saw service during the 2nd Battle of El Alamein in 1942.

The Bishop had a number of design flaws. The Valentine turret was replaced with a boxy superstructure into which was fitted a 25 Pounder. This lead to the vehicle having a very high silhouette which was a distinct disadvance in the open desert. The gun's elevation was restricted to 15 degrees limiting the range to around 6,500 yards (This was around half the range of the standard wheeled carriage 25 Pounder.) To compensate, crews used to build large ramps out of earth and run the Bishop onto these ramps to give them greater range.

The Bishop remained in service during the Italian campaign although it was subsequently replaced by the US M7 'Priest' and the British Sexton.

Ideal for wargaming or just building for display. This is a lovely kit. Not to be missed.
