Impression Style the word processor for Acorn computers

Impression Style is the most advanced general purpose word processor available for Acorn RISC computers, and since its launch, it has become one of the best selling Acorn application programs, receiving numerous plaudits from press and end users alike.

Key features

Some of the key features of Impression Style include:

• Tool bars - Style includes configurable tool bars providing a quick and easy way to select commonly used options, to change text effects or styles, to alter the ruler etc.
• Text editing - obviously it includes all the expected word processing facilities and this includes numerous key short cuts and other features to make it as productive a tool as possible. Drag and drop editing allow sections of text to be moved around by dragging with the mouse.
• Spell checker - Impression Style includes spell check as you type, auto-correct as you type, auto-saving user dictionaries, and smart word guessing. It can even solve crosswords and anagrams.
• Effects and Styles - a huge range of different text effects are possible, and these can be grouped into user named styles for speed. The Impression system of styles is one of the most advanced available on any word processor.
• Auto numbering - this makes creating and maintaining numbered lists an absolute doddle. Options allows 5 different types of number, and it automatically renumbers lists when you edit, delete or add items in the list.
• DTP abilities - Impression Style is not just a word processor, it is also a fully fledged Desk Top Publishing program as well. It is a frame based system, meaning text and graphics can be placed anywhere on the page, and can be moved, and re-sized at will.
• Unlimited length documents - for those producing long documents, such as books or manuals, and especially for complex DTP documents, Impression supports documents that can be far larger than the available RAM.
• Graphics capabilities - of course the ability to be able to put graphics on the page is not just a feature of DTP - most modern word processing programs provide some limited abilities in this area, but Impression goes way further. It accepts Draw, ArtWorks, and Sprite files and includes a new graphics tool that can instantly pan, scale or rotate any graphic. Uniquely it also supports anti-aliasing of Draw files.
• 24-bit graphics - Impression Style is the only word processor or DTP program to support the new 24-bit, full colour, sprites on all Acorn computers. You do not need one of the newer Acorn Risc PCs to take advantage or be able to manipulate, display and print 24-bit pictures.
• Graphics loaders - a TIFF file loader is included as part of Impression so you can directly load these industry standard graphics files. Other loaders available now include JPEG files and PhotoCD.
• OLE - another first for Style is OLE, a system allowing the import and integration of different data types from different programs. This works with the most common programs Draw, Paint, ArtWorks etc and allows these files to be incorporated into documents. A simple double-click is all that is needed to then edit this data in the owning program - Draw, Paint etc. Once edited, closing the window and clicking the Save button puts the data straight back into Impression. It provides a simpler, quicker and more direct form of program integration than ever before.

Other important application programs are being adapted to take advantage of Impression OLE. For example Longman‘s Eureka spreadsheet will offer OLE compatibility, allowing spreadsheet data to be incorporated directly into documents.

Bundled programs

We also include two utility programs that take advantage of OLE. TableMate is a simple table editing utility and Equasor is a mathematical equation creation and editing tool. Both packages are available separately, but are included in the Impression Style package.

WordWorks

Another very significant addition to the Style package is WordWorks, our combined English dictionary and Thesaurus. Fully integrated with Style - you only need to select a word in Style for it automatically to be looked up in the dictionaries. On-line Help

Lastly if you thought all this power would make the program complex or difficult to understand, this is not true. The use of button bars and simple editing features like drag and drop make using Style more productive and easier than ever before. Finally Impression Style is the first mainstream application program to offer full on-line hypertext help. Which means full on-line documentation. So if you‘re not sure how to use a feature, you don't even need to get the manual out.
